Information Bovine Leukocyte Adhesion Deficiency (BLAD) is a lethal immunodeficiency disease found in cattle Holstein Osbornedale Ivanhoe. The condition is caused by a single point mutation (adenine to guanine) at position 383 of the CD18 gene encoding a leukocyte surface molecule, leading to a dysfunction of the granulocytes. Because their healing capacities are impaired, the affected calves suffer from severe infections and die within 15 months from multiple severe infections, even if treated with massive doses of antibiotics.
