Genetic markers in dog species
chiens15.jpg

With the development of molecular biology, different genetic variations associated to animal health, productions (milk, meat), feed efficiency, reproduction or coat color have been reported. Also, selection by gene markers is an essential complement of the traditional selection based on the performances of the offsprings.

The most important contributions of the selection by gene markers tests are:

  • an early selection (at birth date) of animal with high potential,
  • a selection of females,
  • the opening of selection to the whole population,
  • to help the breeders to choose the best animal.
In dog species, Progenus proposes the following gene markers tests:
  1. Basenji
  • PK deficiency
  1. Australian Shepherd
  • MDR1
  1. Shetland sheepdog
  • MDR1
  1. Briard
